The Soul of Zimbabwe: A Journey Through Light and Wilderness

There is a raw, untouched magic to Zimbabwe that stays with you long after the dust settles on your camera gear. This past September, Bindu and I set out on an incredible safari across this beautiful country. Masterfully organized by Federico Veronesi Photography, our journey took us from the thunder of the falls to the deep, silent rhythms of the African bush.

For over a decade, I’ve ventured into the wilderness to capture worlds unchanged by time. But this expedition offered a breathtaking contrast of dramatic light, ancient forests, and intimate wildlife encounters that pushed my work to new depths.

Here is a glimpse into our journey across Zimbabwe's most iconic landscapes.

1. Victoria Falls: The Smoke That Thunders

Our adventure began where the earth splits and the Zambezi River plummets into the abyss. Victoria Falls—Mosi-oa-Tunya—is more than just a spectacle; it is a sensory overload. Standing before the massive curtain of mist, you can feel the thunder of the water vibrating in your chest. The heavy spray and dramatic atmosphere provided an incredible canvas to capture the raw, untamed power of moving water against solid stone.

2. Hwange National Park: The Land of Giants

From the falls, we moved into Hwange National Park, staying at the incredible Somalisa Camp. Hwange is legendary for its massive elephant herds, and it did not disappoint. We spent hours waiting for the perfect moments of low-angle light as these magnificent giants gathered around the waterholes, their heavy footprints leaving a timeless mark on the dry landscape.

But the park's magic extended far beyond its elephants. The golden grass fields provided the ultimate backdrop for tracking apex predators. We were fortunate enough to encounter Hwange’s famous pride of lions, capturing the intense, sharp glance of an alpha male navigating the brush.

In beautiful contrast to the raw power of the predators, we also encountered Zimbabwe's national animal: the magnificent sable antelope. Catching a majestic bull with its sweeping, scimitar-shaped horns silhouetted perfectly against the stark, dusty horizons allowed for powerful, minimalist compositions. The deep contrast of the dry terrain beautifully emphasized both the heavy texture of elephant skin and the sleek, dramatic presence of the park's finer residents.

3. Matusadona National Park: Wilderness Reborn

Next, we tracked toward Matusadona National Park, a rugged wilderness bounded by the waters of Lake Kariba. Staying at Rhino Camp, we explored a landscape defined by dramatic shorelines and a remarkable conservation story. The skeletal, submerged trees rising from Lake Kariba against the setting sun provided an eerie, beautiful backdrop for compositions focusing on structure, silhouettes, and the subtle movements of wildlife along the water's edge.

4. Mana Pools: The Enchanted Forest

Mana Pools is famous for its cathedral-like albida forests, which offer a quality of light that feels almost spiritual. Rays of morning sun pierce through the canopy, illuminating the dust kicked up by old bull elephants. Walking through these golden forests provided some of the most profound photographic moments of the entire trip—particularly when witnessing Mana's most iconic spectacle: majestic bull elephants rising entirely onto their two hind legs, stretching their trunks high into the canopy to reach the prized pods of the albida trees. Capturing that immense structure and balance at eye level was unforgettable.

Beyond the photography, it was incredibly impactful to see the dedication of Nick and his team through the Bush Life Conservancy. Witnessing their boots-on-the-ground anti-poaching efforts and resource conservation programs firsthand added a profound layer of meaning to our entire experience in this enchanted wilderness.
